EXPLORING SCRIPTURE: Doubt and Disappointment

Read aloud Exodus 5:19-6:12

  • What stands out to you?
  • What questions does the passage raise in your mind?

This week’s sermon explored the power of the Name of God, His promises, and the provision He will make for His people. Let’s look at a few key principles from this text to explore what they mean for us today. Answer the questions below based on the scripture you’ve just read.

Power of the Name

  • Who did God appear to before Moses?
  • How did God remind Moses of who He was?
  • How did God remind Moses of Moses’ identity?

Promises of God

  • Who was the original recipient of the covenant God made with Moses’ ancestors?
  • What did God promise He would do by the power of His mighty hand?
  • What did God say He had heard from the Israelites that caused Him to remember His covenant?

Provisions of God

  • What are the 7 “I WILL” statements that the Lord makes to Moses?
  • Which of these statements resonates most with you?

REFLECTION: Dealing with Doubt & Disappointment

  • What is a season in your life where you experienced disappointment with God?
  • What did you do with your disappointment?
  • Are you comfortable expressing your doubt or disappointment to the Lord? Or do you find it challenging to be honest with Him about it?
  • When did you experience a time when God came through for you?

Reflecting with Jesus

Spend a few minutes in prayerful reflection on your own. Either quietly in your head, or writing it down in a journal, answer the following questions:

  • Start by asking God to help slow and focus your mind, so that you may have the ability to discern his voice.
  • Then, admit to any situation in your life where you are experiencing doubt or disappointment in how God is working. Be honest before the Lord with how you’re feeling.
  • Next, examine whether you think God will only come through for you if you do what He wants you to do.
  • Finally, tell Jesus how you are choosing to trust Him in your life right now. What situation or uncertainty are you facing? How can you remind yourself of His power, promises, and provision?

PRAYER

Once you’ve completed your personal time of reflection and prayer, pair up with one or two people and share what came up for you during that time. Then take turns praying for each other.
