Operation Christmas Child Update

Steve Ashlock – Executive Pastor of Operations

This week I witnessed some very special people from our church organize a massive packing party for Operation Christmas Child. As kids from King’s Way filed in, they were quickly engrossed in assembling boxes full of bouncy balls, stuffed animals, art supplies, sports equipment and games. Our church will send these out to children all over the world, in partnership with Samaritan’s Purse. This amazing organization works with community leaders around the globe to distribute these gift boxes to children of all ages – children who may never have received a gift in their lives! But these children aren’t merely given a box filled with goodies; they also get to hear the incredible good news of the Gospel. They get to learn that they are dearly loved by God and that they are very special. So many report that their lives are forever changed!

I still vividly recall that early Christmas morning when I tore open a perfectly-wrapped box containing my long-hoped-for erector set. I was so excited! Even 50 years later, I can remember the hours and days I spent sharing my creative designs with friends and family. It’s such a special memory for me.

At the packing party I was struck by that same sense of joy in the room. It reminded me so much of the way I felt unwrapping my own beloved childhood gift. You’ll often hear that it’s more blessed to give than to receive, but it was a palpable sentiment at the packing party! I’m so grateful to be part of a church community that participates in this program, and many others throughout the year – both here in our community and around the world.

I encourage you to get involved. Your life will be forever changed!

P.S.  The team of workers from Vancouver Church report that they packed 1086 boxes at the packing party and collected 232 prefilled boxes, for a total of 1318 boxes for Operation Christmas Child. This exceeded our goal by over 300!
