Welcome to a deeper dive into this week’s sermon! Our hope is that we’ll all follow the pattern of Jesus and gather with a few other people regularly to learn and grow spiritually. Be sure you read each Bible section out loud. Don’t try to get to every question, just pick a few and go for it. Before you start, take a moment of silence, then pray that the Holy Spirit will fill your conversations as you study God’s word and apply it to your life. Have a great time!

What were you most successful at as a kid? Where did you struggle the most in life?

In your current spiritual experience, where do you feel the strongest and where do you struggle?

Read Luke 5:1-3 Notice that the crowd was eager to listen to Jesus, but the fishermen were there doing their work; it’s like they just happen to be the area. This is where we meet Peter, and get a picture of him as ‘spiritually distracted’. Meaning, while he certainly respects Jesus, he’s not all that focused on Jesus. Can you relate to this? What causes you to get spiritually distracted and not focused on Jesus? How does it affect your life when you are spiritually distracted?

Read Luke 5:4-5 . Again, Peter is very respectful of Jesus, but we see his heart is not leaping with hope as Jesus directs him out to deep water for more fishing. Here we find Peter spiritually doubtful. When you find yourself doubting Jesus, what are you thinking and feeling?

Read Luke 5:6-9 What is it about the experience of God’s overwhelming blessing that would make Peter want Jesus to walk away from him? How does the overwhelming goodness of God make us aware of the overwhelming darkness of our sin?

Have you ever felt like a sinner? Share a time when you were very aware of your own spiritual or character failure. How did you feel around God when you were experiencing this?

Read Luke 5:10-11 How did Jesus reassure these fearful men? How did they respond to his reassurance?

What do you think of this statement? God commissions sinners to help create saints. How do you feel about being called a sinner? How do you feel about being called a saint?

Are you partnering with God to help create saints? First, describe how God’s working in your own life to overcome spiritual failure. Second, share how he’s using you to help others grow closer to Jesus.

Finish your time together praying. Sit in silence for a few moments, quietly asking God, “What do you want me to know? What do you want me to do?” Share what came to your mind & then pray for each other.
