Welcome to a deeper dive into this week’s sermon! Our hope is that we’ll all follow the pattern of Jesus and gather with a few other people regularly to learn from the Scriptures. Be sure you read each Bible section out loud. Don’t try to get to every question here, just pick a few and go for it. Before you start, take a moment of silence; then pray the Holy Spirit will guide your conversations as you study God’s word and apply it to your life. Have a great time!
What’s your best ice cream memory? Was it a birthday party? Grandma’s homemade ice cream? Trips to Dairy Queen? The ice cream shop at the beach? Be sure you mention your top three flavors.
Read John 5:1-15
What stood out to you in the passage? What were the main tensions? What do you think are a few main points John is trying to get across?
Ancient cultures often believed angels touched pools and this resulted in healing of those in the water. We can’t be certain that was happening here, but people certainly believed it was happening. What is true about the people laying around this pool? What do you think it looked and smelled like? Describe the emotional atmosphere you suspect existed? Describe the effects that 38 years of paralysis likely had on this man’s body, mind and faith. What do you think an average day was like for him?
Describe the three ways Jesus reacts to this man, and explain why you think these are all mentioned? Why do you think the paralyzed man responds like he does? What can we learn about his condition mentally, emotionally, and spiritually?
Why do you think Jesus asked him a question before healing him? Why not just heal him without the interaction?
Read Acts 10:37-38
How does this speak of the rebellion of Jesus in this world? Who is he rebelling against? Who is he rebelling for? How do we all benefit from this rebellion?
A Taste of Heaven
As followers of Jesus, we are taught to pray that God’s “will is done on earth as it is in heaven”. And when this prayer is answered, we get a taste of heaven right here on earth. The brother of Jesus says that every good and perfect gift comes down from our Father in heaven (James 1:17). What sweetness is a taste of heaven for you? Literally, what tastes awesome to you? What other blessings are a taste of heaven for you? How are those blessings a reminder of the goodness of God? What do they tell you about God and how he feels toward you?
The Rebellion of Jesus
We live in a world filled with pain and needs, and the kingdom of darkness continues to advance despair and hopelessness. We are called to join Jesus in his rebellion against darkness, and joyfully bring practical help and gospel hope to our friends and to strangers. What motivates you to join Jesus in this rebellion? What keeps you from joining Jesus? (i.e. busyness, fear, overwhelm, indifference, skepticism, other)
Ice Cream for Everyone
One day, Jesus will return to renew the entire universe, including earth. There will be no more sad tears, destructive pain or human death. (And no one will gain an ounce from eating ice cream?!) All of creation will sing for joy that heaven and earth have been reunited. It will be like a great banquet; the most wonderful family BBQ ever! As an invitation to this coming day, we want to bring a taste of heaven to our most vulnerable neighbors. How do you feel about the concept of the Ice Cream Truck? How do you feel about investing prayer, time and dollars into this ministry? What’s the outcome you hope to see?
Finish your time together praying. Sit in silence for a few moments, quietly asking God, “How do you want me to be involved with the Good News Truck?” Share what comes to your mind & then pray for each other, that God will cause us to successfully rebel against overwhelm and hopelessness, and bring people a taste of heaven. Pray also that we will each find ways to share the good news of Jesus with more and more people!
